Day One... The Longest Drive In The History of Drives
Today, we're off and running. Well, I should say, after a sputtering start, we're off and running.
The day began with Chloe waking me up at 5am to tell me my work phone was beeping. At 5am, I always want to sit up and read the latest spam email to come in. We'll have to talk about that later.
We showered, ate breakfast and it was time to pack. Being a veteran of a thousand trips, I had packing down to a science and it was an opportunity to pass along some knowledge to my granddaughter.
And she learned a lot from this exercise. She got to practice rolling her clothes and, wow, did she have a lot of clothes! Today is Wednesday. We'll be back Sunday night. I guess that's enough time for a 9 year old to wear 8 shirts, 6 pairs of shorts, 4 dresses and enough underwear to outfit the Seahawks. But with rolling the clothes and packing cubes, it all fit nicely.
All packed, we hit the road.
And of course, 5 minutes into the trip, the 9-year old road warrior was fast asleep in the back seat.
I should be careful what I complain about. It was an "interesting" drive once she woke up. First, there was the toes in the armpit trick.
Then, in southern Oregon we saw our first wild fire. They were putting it out along the side of I-5. Explained to Chloe that we would probably see more as we got into California. She then wanted to know what we would do if we were golfing when the fire came. I explained to her that we would finish our 18 holes and then make a decision about whether to play 36 or not.
Our last couple of hours on the road consisted of... "Papa, are we there yet?" "No, not yet." "Papa, how much further?" "100 miles Chloe." "Papa, are we there yet?" No, not yet."
And, then we were in Medford and the world was good again.
It's Cracker Barrel for dinner tonight! Chicken Fried Steak has my name on it!
Talk to you tomorrow.
